MEET KATHLEEN MCALISTER - NACD MEMBER & BOARD LEADERSHIP FELLOW
Not long ago I found myself at a crossroads in a 30-year career that has taken me around the world in the energy sector, beginning with Deloitte and ending as CEO of an oilfield services company. Along the way, I was privileged to work with outstanding people on countless interesting and impactful projects, with opportunities I never imagined, including leading a NYSE IPO. I’m delighted to have a second phase in my career serving on corporate boards and helping leadership teams achieve success. It has been exciting to build a portfolio of complementary board seats where the insight gained from issues facing one company can inform discussions at another. Last but not least, it is a pleasure to have time for philanthropic activities in areas close to my heart including mentoring, education and families in need.
HOW I FOUND MY FIRST BOARD SEAT
Amazingly, my first two independent board roles were offered to me during the same week. I was introduced to one opportunity through my professional network which included the CEO of the company, and I became a candidate for the other through one of the top executive search firms.
Shortly after the beginning of my career, a friend who was near retirement shared reflections on early choices that established her career path. She elected to focus on one area of expertise with the expectation that doing so would help ensure success. Most likely it did, although she later came to regret the decisions that ultimately narrowed her career options. Knowing that I relish having a variety of experiences and the opportunity to take on new responsibilities, our conversation opened my eyes to the importance of making choices that lead to more choices. As a result, I began to invest in continual learning and sought stretch roles where I would have the opportunity to grow.
Recently I read Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall, which gave me a new understanding of geopolitics. Currently I’m reading Edge of Chaos by Dambisa Moyo, a keynote speaker at the 2018 NACD Global Board Leaders’ Summit.
I love to travel and greatly enjoy staying in touch with my adult son, our extended family spread across 10+states and friends near and far.
