Fox News Fires Bill O'Reilly in Wake of Scandal, Advertiser Boycott

"Fox News announced the departure of Bill O’Reilly in the wake of a sexual-harassment scandal," reports MarketWatch (April 19, Flint), "bringing an end to the popular host's two-decade run at the TV network." The decision to fire O'Reilly, a staple of the Fox News Channel since its 1996 launch, represents a major "sea change" for both the network and its 21st Century Fox parent company. O'Reilly's ouster comes in the wake of revelations that he and the company paid settlements to women who accused him of sexual harassment and verbal abuse. An earlier New York Times article detailing the total payouts of $13 million to five women who worked at or appeared on his show led to dozens of advertisers boycotting his program and brought a plethora of negative publicity to the company.
